This Memorial Day Weekend, we pause to remember and honor the courageous Clay High School Alumni who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
Each year, a solemn memorial stands proudly at the front of our school, paying tribute to those who once walked these halls and now rest as heroes. Inside, an enduring honor reminds us daily of their courage, commitment and selflessness.
We are forever grateful to these alumni and to all whose sacrifice secured the freedoms we cherish today. 🇺🇸

    📣We SEE YOU 👀 Clay 1980 kids! 📣
    Well done 👏👏👏
🐾Six Bulldog Alumni shared a presentation with the 4th graders at Starr Elementary School honoring the coaches that they had many years ago in youth rec league sports. 🐾
Jeff McNally, CHS ‘80 reconnected with his 6th grade rec league basketball coach, Jim Scharer, a few years back to express how appreciative he was for his time invested in youth coaching. Coach Scharer coached voluntarily coached for Starr alongside many others like Tom Roberts when youth leagues were divided up by the elementary buildings. 🏀🏈⚾️🥎
After Jim Scharer passed away in 2024, his son, Dave Scharer CHS’80 and classmate to Jeff, reached out to indicate that he was going through old boxes his dad had kept, and found their 1974 Oregon Rec League 🏆🐾 Championship Starr Elementary Basketball team plaque, uniforms and photos. Dave passed these items along to Jeff and the memories flooded back. 🏀🏀🏀
After sharing the relics with his family, Jeff thought about donating the memorabilia to Starr Elementary in honor of the Coaches that mentored him and his classmates in the 70s. Current Principal, Mrs. Soltesz loved this idea, invited them to come tell their story, and made space in the front foyer for the display.
Students enjoyed a presentation filled with messages about coaches and mentors and lifelong friendships that were formed long ago. “I wanted those men to know what an impact they had on me and my friends. That is why we did put this display together. We honor them and all the other coaches that selflessly donated their time for the betterment of students”, Jeff stated.
🐾Students were also reminded by the former Bulldogs, that “You can become anything you want. Don't ever let anyone tell you, you cannot do something. We have a park ranger, lawyer, political leader, doctor, business owner, athlete and a teacher up here. We all started at Starr Elementary.” 🐾
    Classmates presenting the framed display:
Lou Reiner CHS ’80, Dave Scharer CHS ’80, Terry Ferguson CHS ’80, Rod Achter CHS ’79 (married Coach Roberts’ daughter, Cindy CHS ’80), Jeff McNally CHS ’80, Mark Dansack CHS ’80 and Mark Stahl CHS ’80. 🥇
Gentlemen, we thank you for sharing your story with our students, our community and all BULLDOG🐾 alumni out there!
What a special day it was for all involved! We value the relationships made during your years at school. We know they can be lifelong and impactful.
